The public’ s perception of and interest in philanthropy has grown at Internet speed during the past decade. Front-page newspaper and magazine articles announce major transformational gifts in all parts of the United States and the world, and provide commentary on the impact of a thriving economy on what has long been known as the Third Sector (with business and government). It has been called a Golden Age for philanthropy– the exciting convergence of a robust economy, a maturing philanthropic sector, and a growing awareness of opportunities to participate in the shaping of vigorous communities through private infusion of funds into social, health, educational, cultural, and other programs. This book is about change: changes that can happen in communities when philanthropy succeeds, and changes that must happen within the nonprofit sector if those truly transforming investments are to be made. This book was written by two people with one goal: to write a definitive book about transformational giving and its impact on twenty-first-century philanthropy. It has been written for nonprofit organizations, their staff leaders, their board members, and other volunteers, and for the nonprofit donor-investor. As such, it is a guide to maximizing both the process and the impact of philanthropy. Kay Sprinkel Grace, building on her successful book Beyond Fund Raising: New Strategies for Innovation and Investment in Nonprofits (Wiley), positions High Impact Philanthropy as a philosophical and strategic handbook; Alan Wendroff, keying off his successful Special Events (Wiley), provides additional strategy, case studies, and tactics. Together, the authors round out the body ofinformation and ideas that provide both inspiration and tools for the reader.

The Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation was founded in 1894, making it one of the oldest charitable organizations in the United States. Closely identified with Progressive Era reform, the foundation has affected over its long history of grantmaking activity virtually every aspect of cultural, educational, and social life in Hawai'i. The foundation's earliest grants favored educational innovation; in more recent decades, it has made large capital grants to cultural organizations and early childhood education. This revised edition analyzes the foundation's development in the 1990s and the early years of the twenty-first century. Special attention is paid to changing trends in national philanthropy and the foundation's strong support for and advocacy of child education and healthcare in Hawai'i. Nonprofits Research - The term Nonprofits Research is used to describe the academic enterprise devoted to teaching and research on nonprofit organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), voluntary associations, voluntarism and voluntary action, philanthropy, civil society, and related activities. It is a loosely-bounded, multi-disciplinary, practice-oriented community.

The Gospel of Wealth - "The Gospel of Wealth" was a book written by Andrew Carnegie in 1901 that described the responsibility of philanthropy by the new upper class of self-made monopolists. The central thesis of Carnegie's essay was the peril of allowing large sums of money to be passed into the hands of persons or organizations ill-equipped mentally or emotionally to cope with them.

Sherbrooke Street Foundation - Sherbrooke Street Foundation is a family philanthropy "committed to assisting individuals and organizations engaged in results-oriented initiatives related to poverty and social inequality, homelessness, and public health in Canada and the United States," according to its web site. The trust is based in Boston and Montreal and administered by the descendants of John Baker, a 19th century political activist and sawmill owner who founded the village of Baker Brook, New Brunswick.
